Leader Messages
So our last video from our inspirational leaders has been posted, and the project has now moved onto a leadership blog series, which will be running over a few months. There are already two blogs so please do check these out, and do get in touch if you are interested in writing one for the project. I would like to send a massive thank you to all the leaders who took the time and effort to get their videos to me, so I can share these with you via ThinkTheory19. I really hope they have made you all feel positive and motivated for the next stages in your careers.
Dr Katerina Kolyva
Katerina is the Executive Director of the Council of Deans (COD) of Health here in the UK as well as hosts the 150 Leaders Student Leadership Programme via the COD. Previous to this, Katerina has held roles in healthcare regulation, as well as being an expert on education and culture policy. I had the pleasure of meeting Katerina in March in Reading and the thing I find most amazing is she is fluent in five European languages fluently, having lived and worked in six European countries. Katerina has held two Marie Curie Fellowships funded by the EU and a national fellowship funded by the Danish Government. You can find out more about Katerina here. This is her message to you! Carol Forde-Johnston
Carol is a Recruitment and Retention Lead in the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Her current role involves leading retention initiatives and providing structured career advice to all levels of staff, with a particular focus on supporting newly qualified nurses and international nurses. Carol has worked as a Registered Nurse for 33 years and as a Lecturer Practitioner for 22 years, which involved leading third-year adult nursing degree modules at Oxford Brookes University. She is passionate about developing and supporting newly qualified nurses and student nurses to improve their confidence and fulfil their future career aspirations. Carol is currently studying for a PhD in nursing at Oxford Brookes University and has written two books to support nurses and midwives developing their careers. Follow Carol on Twitter @FordeJohnston
Prof Alison Leary MBE
Alison is a Professor of Healthcare and Workforce Modeling at the London South Bank University and in her spare time is Clinical Lead for Match Day Medical Service at Millwall Football Club. Alison also trained as a nurse at The Nightingale School at St Thomas Hospital (now Kings College London). In 2015 she was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing and in 2016 a Fellow of the Queen Nursing Institute and a Winston Churchill Fellow. Andrea Sutcliffe CBE
Andrea is the Chief Executive and Registrar over at the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and has been since January 2019. Before this, Andrea was Chief Inspector of Adult Social Care at the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Andrea also worked for 7 years as an Executive Director at the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). Find out more about Andrea here. This is her message to you! Prof Aisha Holloway
Aisha is professor of Nursing Studies and Head of Nursing Studies at the University of Edinburgh. Aisha is also Programme Lead for Research and Evidence for Effective Practice the Global Nursing Now Campaign, launched in February 2017. The campaign's partners are ICN and WHO. Aisha has a strong interest in political nursing leadership, as well as alcohol studies, where she previously worked for the Scottish Government as a nurse consultant for alcohol policy and research. Prof Ian Peate OBE
Ian is the Head of the School of Health Studies at Gibraltar Health Authority, a visiting Professor of Nursing to the St George's University of London and of Kingston University London as well as being the Editor in Chief of the British Journal of Nursing. He has also published many books on nursing and healthcare. Due to his contribution to Nursing and Nurse Education, he was awarded an OBE in the Queen’s 90th Birthday Honours List in 2016 and Royal College of Nursing Fellow in 2017. Prof Ruth Northway
Ruth is a Professor of Learning Disability Nursing at the University of South Wales where she is Head of the Unit for Development in Intellectual Disabilities. Prof Mark Radford
Mark is currently Chief Nurse for Health Education England and Deputy Chief Nursing Officer for England. Mark has been heavily involved in the decisions and plans for nursing students across the UK. Clinically, Mark worked as a consultant nurse in emergency and trauma care and is Professor of Nursing at Birmingham City and Coventry Universities. Dr Rosie Stenhouse
Rosie is a lecturer in the School of Health in Social Science at the University of Edinburgh as well as Associate Director Centre for Creative Relational Inquiry. Rosie also holds the role of School Equality and Diversity Coordinator at the school and spend time in Dundee at Abertay University leading the mental health nursing programme there. Joanne Bosanquet MBE
Joanne has been a nurse for 30 years and is currently the Chief Executive Officer at the Foundation of Nursing Studies. Before this Joanne was the Deputy Chief Nurse for Public Health England thanks to her experience as a consultant nurse in public health and received an MBE in 2013 for services to health and nursing. Prof Fiona McQueen
Fiona is the Cheif Nursing Officer in Scotland and has been since 2015. Fiona has been heavily involved in the decisions and choices for nursing students, therefore is very aware of what students are going through currently. Fiona has been an executive nurse director since 1993, firstly in Lanarkshire and since 1999 with NHS Ayrshire and Arran. Geoffrey Walker OBE
Geoffrey is a Matron at Poole Hospital NHS Foundation and has worked in the NHS for 35 years. He was awarded an OBE in 2009 for services to nursing and was named the British Journal of Nursing’s UK Nurse of the Year in 2013 as recognition of the outstanding contribution he has made to patients in Poole over more 25 years of Nursing. Dr Heather Bain
Heather works at Robert Gordon University, where she is the Academic Strategic Lead for Academic Programmes. Heather has been on secondment with NHS Education Scotland developing national assessment strategies and, more recently with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, as an expert advisor to the development of the new prescribing standards. Prof Brendan McCormack
Brendan is a professor of nursing and Head of the Division of Nursing and Occupational and Arts Therapies at the Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. In 2014 he was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing, awarded the ‘International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame’ by Sigma Theta Tau International and listed in the Thomson Reuters 3000 most influential researchers globally. Susan Masters
Susan is Director of Nursing, Policy & Practice at the Royal College of Nursing and is dual trained in adult and child nursing. Stuart Tuckwood
Stuart is National Nursing Officer for the Trade Union, Unison. As a registered nurse with experience in neurology, neurosurgery, trauma rehabilitation and most recently critical care. He was a steward for Unison and campaigner for healthcare staff such as nurses before taking up his current post. Prof Lynn Killbride
Lynn is the Dean at the University of Dundee's School of Health Sciences, the university where I study, and also is a member of the University Court. Prof Mark Hayter
Mark is Professor of Nursing and Health Research at the University of Hull. He is former Head of Department, Nursing. Mark edits the Journal of Advanced Nursing and was a founding member of the Lancet Commission for Nursing in 2016. He was one of the first UK nurses to be inducted into the American Academy of Nursing and is a Fellow of the European Academy of Nursing Science.
